Most of pathologists may not be aware that Medicare’s fee schedule is variable depending on where they practice across the country. Take CPT 88305 for example, which is the highest volume anatomic pathology test, reimbursement varies from the lowest at $102.38 in Denver to the highest at $140.12 in San Francisco . That’s a difference of about 37 percent, according to Mr.Plandowski’s study.

AP business becomes hot again in 2009 because there is an increasing trend among certain physician specialty groups to bring anatomic pathology (AP) services in-house to capture ancillary revenue and better serve their patient needs. Some of the practices hire pathologists directly to furnish professional services inside the office, while others contract with local pathology groups to furnish professional services. Recently i found a good article written by Plandowski addressing the fundamental issues relating to insourcing AP practices, including legal, compliance, ethical, business, and financial considerations, as well as how these issues impact both hospitals and community-based pathologists.
